In this chapter Tracy returns to Rand to find out from his mother how truly devious Granny was. You have to have gumption to drill holes through your cellar walls just to scare your husband with a fake snake. We are also near the end of Tracy's childhood, and closing in on a pivotal moment in his young life.

The boys go back to the farm, and we learn how Moody dealt with his homecoming after returning from the Pacific during WW II. We hear the unhidden disdain between Granny and Moody’s father, even during prayer, and perhaps most importantly, we meet Miss Odell. She gives us a glimpse of the self-sustaining farm the Moody family enjoyed for generations as free people of color before the Civil War, located well below the Mason-Dixon line.

Tracy and Freddie are growing up, and spend the summer with Granny and Moody in West Virginia. As six and seven year-olds, they are fascinated going to the farm in the camper. Through the camper we learn how Granny took on the racism of the 1950’s when Vera and Jinny were girls. Now, it’s Tracy and Freddie’s turn in the 1970’s. The boys see how stubborn Granny is - even with a fishhook sticking out her eye, and Freddie learns how dangerous collecting eggs can be.
